Awliya Allah

The Beloved Friends of Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala

Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim

(In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate)

"Ala inna Awliya

'Allahi la khawfun aalayhim waa la hum yahzanoona"

"Lo! verily the friends of Allah! no fear comes upon them, nor

shall they grieve."

(Quran-10:62)

Chapter Yunus

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

" There is a group of the slaves of Allah that even the Prophets and martyrs will envy,

" Then someone said," Who are these people perhaps we can love them." And he said,

"They are a people who love each other through the light of Allah not through wealth or family ties. Their faces are filled with nur (light) and they are on pulpits of light, neither do they fear when the people fear nor do they grieve when the people grieve."

The word Wali (plural Awliya) is an Arabic word meaning Friend or Wali meaning Muslim Saint.

Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

"Allah Almighty has created three hundred people, whose hearts are like that of Adam, and He created forty people whose hearts are like Moses. He also created seven people whose hearts are like that of Abraham, and he created five people with a heart like that of Gabriel, and three people with a heart like that of Mika'il and only one person with a heart like that of Rafa'il (Raphael). When such a person dies, Allah Almighty will replace him with one of the three. When one of such three dies, Allah Almighty will replace him with one of the five. When one of the seven dies, Allah Almighty will replace him with one of the forty, and when one of the forty dies, He will replace him with one of the three hundred and when one of the three hundred elite dies, Allah Almighty will replace him with someone He chooses from among the pious masses. Such a person will live among the people, and through his prayers (dua), by Allah Almighty's permission, life and death, rain and prosperity will come and calamity will be averted."

There are two types of Awliya Allah that we know of, some are born  Awliya and some attain this position by supererogatory works, hardship, devotion and worship, however the final decision  for becoming a Wali is with Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala.

"And the slave never ceases to grow closer to Me by nawafil until I love him. And when I love him I am his hearing that he hears by and the sight that he sees by, and his hand that grips with, and his legs that he walks on. If he asks Me I will give and if he seeks My refuge I will give him refuge."

We will never be able to describe Allah's love, kindness for his love ones and his infinite mercy for his Awliya, Allah has granted such gift to those that is dear to him, those that follow his path and love him and are devoted in their worship,  Allah's protection is upon them and Allah has also warn us that hurting or causing injury to one of his love ones, will mean that Allah Almighty himself will be at war with you, who is there that want to be against Allah Almighty himself ? No one.

" Verily Allah said, the one who hurts my Waliy I have declared war against him. And there is nothing better for the slave as a means of coming closer to Me than performing the compulsory deeds."

" I am with the thought of my slave, if he remembers Me by himself I remember him by Myself, and if he remembers Me in a group I remember him in a group better (than his) and if he comes close to Me the length of a hand I draw close to him the length of a fore-arm, and if he draws close to me the length of a fore-arm I draw near to him the length an arm and if he comes to me walking I come to him like a wind", " I am with him if he remembers Me".

There are many articles written about the lives of the Awliya, stories told about Awliya from around the world, from their Karamat(miracles) to their struggles in this life, their devotions and love for Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala, even though we heard about the Awliya,  their is still so much we do not know about Awliya,  except for Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala it is stated in the hadith qudsi, " verily my saints are under my domes, and only I know them," only Allah knows their true identities as they are hidden from common people, however Awliya(saints) amongst themselves recognize and know each other, We are also told about their special abilities to perform "Karamat" miracles,  how they  help people, there  are many examples in the Holy Quran and Hadith that mentioned Awliya Allah. One of the example in the  Holy Quran where it is mentioned how Prophet Suleiman Alaihis salam requested the throne of the Queen of Sheba (Bilqis);

Quran: 27 AL-NAML

He said: “O chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me surrendering themselves in obedience?” A`Ifrit (strong one) from the jinn said: I will bring it to you before you rise from your place (council). And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work.” One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: “I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!” Then when he [Sulaiman (Solomon)] saw it placed before him, he said: “This is by the Grace of my Lord -to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for (the good of) his own self, and whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his own self."

In this Quranic Verse we see that a jinn would have brought the throne  before Prophet Suleiman (as) before he got up  from where he was sitting and it only took the person of knowledge a "Twinkling of an eye" to bring the Queen's throne.  Awliya are not limited in this world, whatever favor they ask of Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala, Allah will surely grant it to his beloved servants for Allah is the most Generous,  most Merciful, most kind.

Awliya Allah the beloved of Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala, no one knows the limits, the knowledge that Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala has given to his beloved Awliya , what is hidden is only in Allah's hand and Allah gives his knowledge, love, mercy and forgiveness to whom he pleases amongst all his creatures and amongst all of Mankind. We must be kind, generous and deal justly with people because we may never know who the person might be to Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala,  he/she just might be one that has Allah's protection and guidance, we indeed have great examples to follow not only from Prophets but also from these special people called Awliya Allah, lets not take for granted what Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala has given us, we have to learn and set the best example for ourselves and others.

Allah is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliya (supporters and helpers) are Taghut [false deities and false leaders], they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever. (Qur’an 2:257)
